Youichi Wada, president of Square-Enix, spoke with Japanese website Impress Game Watch about Nintendo's plans for online networking and the Revolution. The interview, taken after Satoru Iwata's comments about the Nintendo DS network, shows that Wada has a great deal of respect and support for the strategy. Of particular note is that Wada was most impressed with Nintendo's idea of letting players connect to others whom they've met in real life only. While this seems like quite a controversial stance, it is reported that Animal Crossing DS will allow for online play with strangers, so at least Nintendo is willing to support both ways of interaction. Wada commented on the apparent transition that this would create. "It gives the image of taking the real world seamlessly into the virtual world," he said. "the means of building a community will be completely different, and support and services will also change." Wada also goes on to comment on the Revolution, which will seemingly be the next step for Nintendo's online goal. "What increased our interest further, is that the next step is already being prepared for Revolution. [Nintendo's networking plan is] not just a portable, not just a console -- it's exactly what we wanted in that it's the birth of a completely new platform." Wada also tells his ambitions for Square-Enix -- "From here on, we'll have to challenge ourselves with content in response to what Nintendo offers. We would like to give strong support." These are indeed encouraging words from the Japanese giant. Stay tuned for the official unveiling of Nintendo's network plan at E3. |
