Metroid Prime TrilogyBy Jim Webb - 08-25-09 Print Email9.5, 9.5 and 8.8. These are the scores garnered by the 3 titles of the Metroid Prime series respectively. The first 2 having made their appearance on Gamecube while the 3rd debuted on Wii. Metroid Prime was a ground breaking re-imagining of the series roots and famed 2d gameplay. While moving into the 3rd dimension, players moved into Samus Aran's head. The fixed 3rd person perspective camera was replaced by a fantastically polished 1st person viewpoint akin to first person shooters. While the game parlayed many elements of first person shooters, it carried over its adventuring heart and melded the genres into something sublimely unique. That same foundation was used to build the sequels without too much deviation - though some perceive this as a flaw. With Corruption, developer Retro Studios used the intuitive Wii controls to further immerse the gamer into the 1st person perspective; aiming the arm cannon with your Wii remote just as Samus does on screen. This control improvement was heralded by fans and many gaming publications as the best console 1st person control method ever devised. Fans instantly began wondering what the first 2 titles in the series might play like with a similar user input method. Thankfully Nintendo and Retro Studios have answered this very question and have brought Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes to the Wii complete with the brilliantly executed control scheme. Now all 3 can be yours if the price is right and let me tell you, the price is definitely right. Nintendo is giving gamers a 3 for 1 deal. All 3 titles in the Metroid Prime series on one game disc in a collectors edition metal box including game art collection for the same standard price of 1 game - $49.99. While the control upgrade is the biggest new feature for the first 2 series entrants, it's not the only additions they've received. Corruption introduced their own version of Achievements with Vouchers and now they've made their way to Prime 1 and 2. Further enhancements include 16:9 wide screen for all 3 games, some texture upgrades, better lighting in Metroid Prime 1, more balanced gameplay in Echoes and faster loading times in Corruption (one of the biggest complaints regarding the game by most fans). It's 2 of the highest rated games of the last generation coupled with one of the brightest standouts in the current Wii game lineup at a very attractive price. Each game alone containing roughly 20 hours of solid game time giving you a price to game time ratio few single player first person perspective based games can match. With Metroid Prime Trilogy, Nintendo and Retro Studios have given the fans a fantastic product and have given the series a a much warranted second life. Don't waste it. Ratings |
