NBA 2K10By Lamar Bland - 11-18-09 Print EmailIt's the fall so strap on your headbands and hit the hardwood. Basketball season is underway. And every basketball season means a new NBA 2K. This year we get NBA 2K10, the 10th anniversary edition. Is this anniversary worth celebrating? To be honest, on the Wii, no. This game is just utter rubbish that's obviously some terrible, cutback, PS2 port with tacked on controls. I will give a round of applause to Visual Concepts for actually giving the game the same online as the other consoles and Wii Speak functionality, but everything else is just as shoddy as can be. The gameplay just really falls apart. With controls that just don't seem to work. There's no alternative for your controller. You MUST use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers. The way you shoot is by flicking the Wii remote up, then flicking it forward, as if you were taking a real shot. The speed at which you flick the Wii remote augments depending on what basketball player you are using. A player like Shawn Marion has a really quick release, and a player like Shaquille O'Neal has a very slow release. These motions do not work well much at all. Sometimes when you try to shoot the ball, your on screen player will continue to pump fake instead of actually shooting the ball. That's really upsetting when you have an open shot, but you can't get it off and into the hoop. The frame rate also doesn't cooperate with your gameplay experience. With sudden drops in the frame rate, you sometimes don't get the correct release on a shot, or the correct crossover. This game gets EXTREMELY frustrating on the gameplay front. Visuals are just as upsetting as the actual gameplay. As previously stated, the frame rate hopsteps around, ruining your visual experience. Unfortunately, the texturing and animations don't do the Wii any justice either. The "jaggies" heavily exist in NBA 2K10, sometimes distorting one's appearance. Also with flat textures, some players look NOTHING like their real-life counterparts. The animations are just stale and dull. There's nothing really interesting going on that's giving the game an "Oh my goodness, this is like real life" feel. The audience atmosphere is dull, the on-court atmosphere is bland and boring. I will say this though, the hardwood flooring looks pretty good on the Wii with real time reflection. The lighting is also decent, like when your star players are coming onto the court and the lights are going wild. Here's a positive to the game. The sound is identical to the sound in the other versions. With your favorite commentators like Kevin Harlan and Cheryl Miller, with her on-the-floor reporting, although you don't actually see her. The same crowd chants, jeers, and cheers are also present in NBA 2K10, so there should be no disappointment on the sound front. This game does, in fact, have some major flaws that can really cripple your gaming experience. I hardly doubt that any of you will not get upset with this game. It's just that frustrating, NOTHING works. Visual Concepts delayed the game, and I really don't see why they did because the game is just no really fun. It's controls are annoying, it's visuals are very PS2-ish, and it just feels like a tacked on gimmick. Some people may be able to look pass these errors, and if you do, you are one heck of a patient person. NBA 2K10 shoots a 5.9/10. Ratings |
